Achieve together have become the latest adult care provider to introduce Dechoker ACD equipment as phase 1 of training and deployment is completed across more than 150 sites.
Formed in 2018 with a merger between cmg and The Regard Group, Achieve together are one of the biggest support providers for people with learning disabilities and autism in the UK.
The risk of choking can be significantly increased in people with additional needs due to conditions other than those associated with later life.
Individuals with learning disabilities such as autism are more likely to have sensory motor and coordination difficulties. This can lead to challenges using cutlery or with chewing and swallowing.
Care staff at Achieve together competed Dechoker device training before taking delivery using their existing Access / eLearning For You platform on which the CPD Certified course is already available.
Training was allocated to learners two weeks prior each service taking delivery of their Dechoker equipment. This allowed sufficient time to ensure staff were able to complete the course.
Further devices are planned as new services and new service users are identified.
Late last year an NHS Trust published a study in the Frontiers Journal that demonstrated how effective the Dechoker ACD can be in a choking emergency.
Across the study of 27 incidents of use Dechoker was found to clear the airway sufficiently to allow the person to breathe. It also reduced attendances to A&E by nearly 80%
