Adult Social Care

Adults with often complex needs such as epilepsy, autism and those learning disabilities can result in making them prone to choking.

When faced with a choking emergency, the situation can often be made more complicated by the presence of a wheelchair.

As the Dechoker uses suction to remove the obstruction, it can be used when the person choking is either sitting or lying down.

When a service user dies as a result of choking, the effects are often traumatic for everyone involved.

Not withstanding the feelings of the the family, there is also an impact on the other service users, the staff involved and the reputation of the provider and the centre involved.

In addition, what follows will be an inquest held by the coroner with the involvement of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the local safeguarding board with legal representation required.
