Dechoker UK

For a number of years it has been a mandatory requirement as part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for childcare providers (including childminders) to have Paediatric First Aid trained member of staff on the premises and on trips at all times.

More recently this has been expanded to include a requirement for a current Paediatric First Aid certificate as part of a professional qualification.

Despite safeguards, choking incidents can occur and as in all cases an immediate response is required.  Although for Infants the use of Chest Thrust instead of Abdominal Thrusts is advised, the objective to create an 'artificial cough' is the same.

DeChoker uses directed suction over the airway to remove the obstruction and clear the airway.

Current Availability

Current guidance from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) does not allow the sale of Airway Clearance Devices (ACDs) specifically intended for use on children in the UK.

We are currently working with various agencies and partners including the NHS and the MHRA to increase the availability of DeChoker to include Ofsted registered childcare settings.
