  • NHS study explores choking in Adult Care sector

    A study that looks at choking and how it managed in the Adult Care sector has been undertaken by the The Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT).

    Due to be published shortly, it examines the issues faced managing a cohort that is at an increased risk of choking, and who often present a challenge when attempting to deliver an emergency response.

    The research team looked at the role of soft and hard foods and explored the existing research into Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) treatments.

    Choking is regarded as the silent killer and is often overlooked a a cause. With other conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia often seen as the cause of death when statistics are calculated.

    The second half of the study looks multiple cases where a Dechoker has been used in a choking emergency in an adult care setting.
