A&E avoided as Dechoker saves resident from choking

Airway cleared in seconds and recovery in minutes

Care staff stepped up again last week when a resident began choking and was struggling to breathe. Working together they administered first aid which failed to remove the obstruction.

Fortunately, all services within the Coverage Care group have Dechoker devices on-site and once deployed, their airway was cleared in seconds and recovery took minutes.

A recently published study on the effects and current treatment of choking showed that the elderly cohort were at a significant risk of injury from both.

“This is a rather unsurprising finding given the obvious potential effect of repeatedly hitting someone hard between the shoulder blades.”

However this is the first time that there has been an attempt to review the available literature on Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) and we are currently working hard to make a summary of the contents available.
