It is a common misconception that is principally children that are most likely to die from choking – something the data clearly shows not to be the case.
Every year Dechoker UK commission the Office for National Statistics to research and publish data on choking death rates in for England and Wales.
This is both due in part to the absence of data from the NHS, Care Quality Commission (CQC) or Department for Health & Social Care (DHSC) and is part of our #chokeaware programme.

The silent killer
The increased death rate in this age group is due to several factors including both physical and neurological changes that develop as we age.
Our muscle strength, condition of our teeth and posture, combined with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other neurological conditions are estimated to increase the risk of choking seven-fold in people over the age of 65**
When regarded as a choking risk as part of a Speech and Language Team (SaLT) diagnosis, the result is often a switch to a diet of soft or pureed foods. This itself may account for a higher percentage of incidents caused by soft foods.
Mashed potato, scrambled egg and bread are very common foodstuffs to cause a choking incident in the elderly – not steak, gammon or other meats.

Dechoker – Adult
The Adult Dechoker is fitted with a standard size adult mask – the same as those found on Ambu Bags and resuscitation kits.
There are two smaller versions available for those adults whose particular requirements may find a smaller mask better suited.
